3. I AM MALALA - BOOK REVIEW
by Pervez Hoodbhoy
=========================================
Malala’s enemies are equally likely to be Islamists or America-obsessed leftists and post-modernists. These days it is so hard to tell them apart.

4. INDIA: A SYMPHONY OF THE ABSURD
by Ambrose Pinto
=========================================
To secular Indians, who hold that religion belongs to the private and personal space, two recent national events of three state agencies should be a matter of concern. The first one was the act of ISRO Chairman Dr K. Radhakrishnan performing pooja with the replica of the Mars Orbiter Mission at the Lord Venkateshwara Temple in Tirupati a day before the launch of the spacecraft from Sriharikota. The second one was the digging for gold by the Archaeological Department with support from the Geological Survey of India on the basis of a dream of a holy man.

5. INDIA: MORAL POLICING SHUTS ART EXHIBITION BY BALBIR KRISHAN AT THE MUSE GALLERY, HYDERABAD - STATEMENT BY SAHMAT
=========================================
Throwing more light on what transpired post the preview, Kaali Sudheer, curator, said, “Things were fine during the preview on Saturday, which went on till quite sometime. Around 11 pm, a few right wing activists paid me a visit at the gallery and asked me to cancel the show. They said the artworks and artist stand for everything that's ‘against Indian culture'.” When asked why he didn't approach the Police, Sudheer said, “The people who paid me a visit are extremely well-known and influential. I don't want hassles. I had no option but to cancel the show.”

6. INDIA: CPM SHOULD LEARN FROM LATE PC JOSHI AND NOT FROM MULAYAM SINGH YADAV
=========================================
The Communist Party of India (CPM) is the life-line of the communist movement in India. There are other communist parties too, like CPI, but there is no apparent political and ideological reason for their existence; they reflect the decay and not the rejuvenation of the communist movement. The only radically different trend and, indeed, the greatest vulgarization of Marxism is represented by the Maoist movement, which is neither Maoist nor a movement but seems to get undue attention on the part of the media because of its violent nature.

8. STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BHOPAL GAS LEAK DISASTER
=========================================
s noted on previous occasions, even nearly three decades after the disaster, neither the State nor the Central Government has made any attempt to either undertake a comprehensive assessment of the ramifications of the Bhopal disaster or to take necessary remedial measures. As a result, the gas-victims have had to wage concerted struggles in their quest for medical relief, compensation and justice. During 2013, while achieving partial success on the litigation front, lack of progress on most other pressing issues concerning the Bhopal gas-victims continue to remain a source of major concern.

11. INDIA: PROF IRFAN HABIB'S REMARK ON AMU MINORITY CHARACTER CAUSES STIR
(via Dilip Simeon's Blog)
=========================================
Professor Irfan Habib deserves support for his stand. The ghetto mentality of certain sections of Muslim intelligentsia is harmful both for Indian Muslims and for the political climate in the country as a whole. The response to his remarks by those who disagree with him is evidence of the negative character of this ghetto mentality. Personal attacks are being made and he is being accused

by Marieme Helie Lucas

16. PAKISTAN: THE EFFECTS OF CLASS SEGREGATION
by Kamila Hyat
=========================================
We live in a deeply segregated society. Segregation by gender may be one aspect of this, but segregation by class or by social standing may have a still more detrimental effect on how we function and think. While better access to education, and greater parental endeavours to get their children the best they can should have created the flows of mobility in a social structure that has been static for generations, it remains blocked in many different ways.

17. PAKISTAN AND THE UNITED STATES: A FRIEND IN NEED?
by I.A. Rehman
=========================================
Quite often, Pakistan has wanted the United States to give it more aid than the latter had promised and has been told to exert more for the realisation of agreed objectives by improving its economy, governance and capacity to benefit from external aid. There have also been occasions when Pakistan has urged the US to not forget its responsibility to reciprocate Pakistan's performance in securing the goal of friendship. The reason, on most occasions, has been a difference in the partners' perceptions of their obligations under mutual assistance agreements and the substance of partnership deeds. The seeds of this divergence were sown quite early in Pakistan's history.

19. ISIS REPORT ON EXPANSION OF INDIA'S URANIUM ENRICHMENT FACILITIES
=========================================
Commercial satellite imagery shows that the construction is finishing of what appears to be a second gas centrifuge facility at the Rare Materials Plant (RMP), near Mysore. This new facility could significantly increase India´s ability to produce highly enriched uranium for military purposes, including more powerful nuclear weapons. India is also in the early stages of building a larger unsafeguarded centrifuge complex, the Special Material Enrichment Facility (SMEF), in Karnataka. However, as a result of domestic opposition alleging this facility is on environmentally sensitive lands, the National Green Tribunal, the government environmental oversight body, ordered major construction to halt temporarily in August 2013.

=========================================
Davies, Brenton, and award-winning designer Tim Hatley – a high-powered team by anyone's reckoning – tell a story that almost defies credulity, with Hatley's set, evoking the beauty of the Mughal architecture of Northern India to heighten the poignancy of what is about to be destroyed. In 1947, Atlee chose an English circuit judge, Cyril Radcliffe – a man who had never been to India and had no knowledge of cartography – as the person who would choose where to impose the border between India and the new state of Pakistan in only 5 weeks.
