For Immediate Release World Wide !

(May 27, 1999)

STATEMENT RELEASED BY PAKISTAN PEACE COALITION (PPC), CONSISTING OF JOINT
ACTION COMMITTEE FOR PEOPLE'S RIGHTS, (JAC), ACTION COMMITTEE AGAINST ARMS
RACE (ACAAR)
AND CITIZENS' COMMITTEE FOR PEACE (CPC)

We view with great apprehension the fierce fighting along the Line of
Control in Kashmir, especially in the Kargill Sector and fear that such
events may well prelude a nuclear clash between Pakistan and India. Both
countries are pursuing a suicidal policy of confrontation and we demand
an immediate halt to hostilities before the situation becomes
uncontrollable.

We urge India to withdraw its troops from Kashmir and call upon Pakistan
to cease its support to the militants, so that a solution based on the
freely expressed wishes of the people of Kashmir becomes possible and an
era of peace, cooperation and progress, instead of nuclear devastation,
may greet the twentyfirst century in South Asia.
