*The Anti-POSCO Struggle in India*
The Pohang Steel Company (POSCO) is a S. Korean steel giant pushing to build
an integrated steel plant, private port, and captive mines in Orissa in
Eastern India. The project will displace over 22,000 farmers in the
plant/port area and a minimum of another 10,000 indigenous peoples
(adivasis) in the mining area. In addition, it will destroy the livelihood
of an additional 50,000-75,000 fisherfolk and subsistence farmers. The
resistance to the project began in 2005 and the main people's organization
is the POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (Anti POSCO Struggle Alliance).

*What Does the TIAA CREF Have to do With POSCO?*

The TIAA-CREF is the most prominent pension fund for US-based academics and
has investments of over $40 million in POSCO. Over the years, faculty
across the US have pushed for TIAA-CREF to be ethical in its investments. As
a result, the TIAA-CREF is a signatory to the Principles for Responsible
Investments (PRI) that state unequivocally that the TIAA-CREF will use its
leverage as a large investor to secure environmental, social, and governance
standards. SASI and MZPSG have already written to the TIAA-CREF seeking its
adherence to PRI standards and urging the fund to withdraw its investments
in POSCO. As of today, the TIAA-CREF has only stone walled by refusing to
engage the issue.

Join SASI and MZPSG at a public teach-out and demonstration urging the
TIAA-CREF to adhere to its own principles of Responsible Investing. The
event will feature public discussions on the POSCO project, the TIAA CREF's
and other investors' roles in POSCO, and the broader politics of
disempowerment and displacement in addition to urging the TIAA CREF to
withdraw its investments from POSCO via a faculty petition to be handed over
during the event.
