FOR THE PRAYER VIGIL IN SUPPORT OF IMMIGRANTS DETAINED AT THE
MONMOUTH COUNTY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION
- Religious leaders and community members are coming together to
express concerns about detention conditions of immigrants at Monmouth
County Correctional Institution and in New Jersey County Jails that
hold immigrants.
- We will be calling for a "community accountability board" as a
mechanism to provide meaningful oversight that is needed for safe and
humane conditions in New Jersey immigration detention facilities.

2) The Politics of Immigration: website, blog, upcoming dialogue events
Hi everyone,
Our book, The Politics of Immigration: Questions & Answers, has been
out for well over a month on Monthly Review Press. You can find it at
most independent and chain bookstores around the country, as well as
internet booksellers like Amazon and Powell's Books (for Powell's, if
you enter the site through http://powellsunion.com 10% of your
purchase goes directly to the workers).
Activists, organizers and grassroots educators who want to order the
book in bulk can get it at a special discount; contact Monthly Review
directly at bookorder @ monthlyreview.org or 212-691-2555 for details.
The official website for our book, The Politics of Immigration:
Questions & Answers, is now up and running at
http://thepoliticsofimmigration.org
The website includes a chronology of US immigration laws (which was
left out of the printed book for lack of space), and updated resource
lists with links, among other information. (And the acknowledgments,
which were unfortunately left out of the book by mistake.)
We also have a blog at http://thepoliticsofimmigration.blogspot.com
where we post information about upcoming book events, as well as
articles and announcements we think you might want to know about. And
if you're on myspace, please friend us at
http://myspace.com/thepoliticsofimmigration.
We'd love to hear your impressions and feedback on the book, the
website and the blog. You can contact us directly
at thepoliticsofimmigration @ gmail.com. We also encourage you to
post reader reviews of the book on Amazon and other bookseller websites.
We have several dialogue events coming up in the NYC area in
September. Details are on our blog at
http://thepoliticsofimmigration.blogspot.com/2007/09/upcoming-dialogues-on-immigration.html
We hope to soon post a description of the dialogue format on the
website so people can get a better sense of what to expect. But the
basic idea is a participatory format where we work together to
address anti-immigrant arguments and concerns or questions about
immigration, making use of the knowledge and experience of all the
participants. (And yes, we'll have copies of the book available for
those who want to buy it.)
We are eager to facilitate more dialogue events in the NYC area,
south to DC and north to Boston, so please get in touch if you're
interested. We're also planning some trips soon. Jane will be in the
Midwest in early October: Chicago & its suburbs; possibly Madison
and/or Milwaukee; Champaign-Urbana; St. Louis; Terre Haute &
Bloomington (IN); and Indianapolis. If you have contacts in any of
these places (or nearby) who might be interested in setting up
community dialogue events, classroom visits or media interviews,
please pass them along. We are hoping to partner with local
grassroots activist groups, congregations, etc. in each place. David
will be in northern California (Bay Area) in late October, so please
pass along your contacts there. Jane will likely be in southern
California in early November. If you'd like us to come somewhere
else, let us know.
Thanks!
Jane & David
