On behalf of the National Organization for Women-New York State, we are
concerned that protective mothers like Esther Yang are at risk of being
incarcerated by sentencing her to Rikers Island. Mothers who are loving and socially
active do not belong in jail along side criminals.
You may know of the PBS documentary, "Breaking the Silence" in which NY
Yankees Manager Joe Torre is interviewed regarding his experience of enduring
abuse as a child. If you have not seen this film, we would urge you and your
staff to view it.
The documentary also interviews children whose parents are engaged in
custody battles. It illustrates how abusive men often manage to re-abuse their
spouses through unnecessary litigation, and by using any means necessary to win.
This unnecessary litigation is exhausting (physically, emotionally,
financially and spiritually) and very stressful for the parent who is under attack.
This has serious effects on the children caught in the middle as well.
The documentary also shows the widespread problem of mistakes being made in
cases of domestic violence and the court's refusal to correct its errors,
even in the face of new evidence. It is our hope that you and your staff will
be sensitive to avoid such costly mistakes.
The National Organization for Women-New York State sees this as a pattern
and has seen this happen in case after case, in which an abusive man makes life
nightmarish for the mother of their children, who is most often a good
mother, and naturally protective of her children and her relationships with them.
Putting mothers like Esther Yang in Rikers Island serves no purpose to her
or to her 7 year
old daughter, who needs her mom to be present and active in her young life,
nor for society as a whole.
On behalf of NOW-New York State and the organizations listed below, we ask
that you find it in your heart not to punish mothers like Esther Yang, but to
do what is in the best interest of children, allowing them to be with their
good and loving mothers. Please do not sentence her to time at Rikers
Island with people who are neither responsible nor active members of society.
Sincerely,
Marcia Pappas
