ABOUT FALU
Falu is quickly becoming recognized for a rare ability to seamlessly
blend her signature adult contemporary/alternative rock style with a
formidable Indian classically-shaped talent.
Born Falguni Shah in Bombay (now Mumbai) into a family of
classically-trained vocalists, for years Falu devoted up to sixteen
hours a day honing her singing. She was fortunate to have studied under
Kaumudi Munshi, Uday Mazumdar, and the legendary sarangi/vocal master
Ustad Sultan Khan, a relationship that continues to nurture her
creativity and musical spirit.
In 1999, Falu moved to Boston and worked as a visiting lecturer of music
at Tufts University. It was there she met up with the Indo-American band
Karyshma and became their lead vocalist. This new endeavor gave her the
opportunity to travel across the States performing at various
universities and fundraisers. In 2001, she met up with Asian Massive
leader Karsh Kale and hit the nationwide club and festival circuit as a
featured vocalist.
While Falu continues to perform her classical material throughout the
United States, her main passion lies in bringing her Indian classical
roots to contemporary American music. The real challenge is to push
towards innovation while staying true to 5,000 year old traditional
roots, says Falu.
Falu and her band have taken New York City by storm with several high
profile appearances including performances at Pianos, CBs 313 Gallery,
Mercury Lounge, Satalla and The Knitting Factory. She performed at a VIP
dinner prior to the Healing the Divide benefit concert featuring His
Holiness the Dali Lama at Lincoln Center in 2002. The event, hosted by
Richard Gere & Philip Glass, drew several celebrity onlookers who were
blown away by her amazing talent. More recently, Falu was invited to
perform with Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Project, and she is currently serving
as one of Carnegie Halls Music Ambassadors to New York City.
