TERRITORIES, the seventh annual visual arts show organized by the South
Asian Womens Creative Collective is a group exhibition of 14 artists which
presents contemporary art from diverse cultural contexts throughout South
Asia and its diaspora. The show is juried by Qamar Adamjee of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and Dipti Desai of NYU. It will be on view from
August 20 to September 5, from 11 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday-Saturday and 12 t5 on
Sunday at Gallery ArtsIndia.
On Thursday, August 26, a Film/Video Screening & Performance Benefit
[co-sponsored by 3rd I NY], featuring filmmakers, spoken word artists, and
performers from SAWCCs membership, will be held at Gallery ArtsIndia from 7
to 9:30 p.m. Aradhana Nair from the SAWCC Board of Directors will emcee the
event.
The films screened will be Yours by Kirthi Nath, The Inventor by Megha
Barnabas, Border Crossing by Anula Shetty, Woman Flying by Jesal
Kapadia, Ent-homo-philia by Hima B. and Hole by Keshni Kashyap.
Performers will include mezzo-soprano Farah Kidwai, spoken word artists
Shailja Patel, Alka Bhargava and Vennila Kain, performance artist Suneet
Sethi, Bharatnatayam dancer Sonali Skandan (Shroff) and singer Tasneem Nanji
from the band JUNGLI.
The South Asian Womens Creative Collective is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to the advancement, visibility, and development of emerging and
established South Asian Women artists. Since 1997, SAWCC has been an
alternative community within which to explore the creative process and

3rd I NYs monthly film and music salons designed by local filmmakers and
experimental djs showcase the works of independent filmmakers of South Asian
descent and local djs, musicians and electronica artists. For more
