:*****************************
We are writing to invite you to a colloquium on intellectual freedom. As
you know, in recent years there have been serious threats to the freedom of
thinkers and to freedom of thought in many countries in the world. In a
number of cases these threats have been sufficiently strong that freedom of
thought and discourse have been effectively dampened. Freedom of thought
is threatened in many countries by the increasing entry of religious and
political conflict, as well as intellectual dogmatism, into public
spaces. Universities are important sites for the exercise of intellectual
freedom, and the application of reason to counteract such conflictual
partisanship and dogmatism.

We will hold a colloquium on the subject of intellectual freedom and its
safeguarding at Columbia University on Monday, April 26th. We hope to take
note of the role that Columbia University and other institutions have
played historically in safeguarding the intellectual freedom of
controversial academic figures. We expect a number of leading academics,
free speech activists, and university administrators to offer their views
on the present climate and future prospects of intellectual freedom. The
speakers represent a variety of disciplinary and regional perspectives.

The Colloquium is free and open to the public.
