1. IMPERIAL FOLLIES And Their Lessons for Iraq: Japan in Manchuria vs. US
in Postwar Japan.
2. NYCs Proposed NON-PARTISAN ELECTIONS: Traps for the Poor and
Disenfranchised?
3. PEACE TAXI
**************************************************
1. When Japan invaded and annexed Manchuria in China before WW2 the
rhetoric used by Japan to justify its action sounds so familiar to our ears
it was to liberatethe Chinese from warlords, guerrillas, banditsand
generalized chaos. But as argued by our guest, MIT historian JOHN DOWER
the reality, Japanese greed for regional dominance and for Chinas natural
resources, led Japan to actions that proved, in the end, to be
miscalculations as serious as the USs actions in Iraq may yet prove to be
for the US.

2. Next we take a look at the New York City Charter Revision Commissions
proposal for nonpartisan elections for all city offices. Opponents of the
measure fear that it will disenfranchise low-income voters and those in
communities of color while enhancing the influence of money and incumbency
in elections. Joining us to discuss the implications of the proposal will
be GLENN MAGPANTAY from the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund
(AALDEF).

3.The final feature on tonights show is a look at Peace Taxi, an art
project that brings cross-cultural artists, taxi drivers and the general
public together in response to globalization and the threat to civil
liberties around the world. Peace Taxi has created site specific art work
such as audio pieces, postcards and hung objects inside Toronto taxis for
the month of August, 2003 and was launched by members of the South Asian
Visual Arts Collective. Our guest: Peace Taxi founder, RACHEL KALPANA JAMES
